Great stuff here. 413 is the alter ego of bass player David Pisabarro, musical genius and Spain’s answer to Robert Fripp, if Robert Fripp smoked more bowls and did a brief stint in Die116 back in the day. David wrote and produced the album and asked a bunch of friends to join him. The result is nothing short of amazing.
Opener “The Town” is a fully blown Today is the Day style affair that could’ve been nicked straight from “Willpower”. All tortured vocals and tom heavy drumming. This is what I needed today, good musicanship, songwriting that is well structured and forward thinking, much like the masters Voivod 413 have that sound, almost futuristic in it’s approach.
The next 2 tracks kinda blend into each other culminating in a massive crescendo of pounding drums and huge walls of guitar’s and feedback. Fucking thing sounds like Bathory for fucks sake. 3 tracks in and this cd is already something special.
Midway through and we’re back with the prog beatdowns. The drumming on this album is incredible, all staccato fills like Don Cab and “Red” era King Crimson. Everything on this album is incredible for that matter, riffs seem to bend and weave around each other, the variety of the vocals, harsh, spoken word, yet always disturbing and somewhat distraught sounding.
Whether 413 are kicking your face in with math metal greatness, tripping you up with the constant time changes or tucking you into bed at night with the odd drone soundscape, you need this in your life. Even the Gary Glitter chants on album closer “The Yethunter” don’t spoil it.
An awesome piece of work.
