French emo / screamo – three words that tend to make me look eagerly over at my stereo before all chaos breaks loose. Tobaïas lie somewhere in this realm, perhaps between Hyacinth and Baron Noir. Racing through four tracks in about seven or eight minutes, they know the essential ingredients of the genre. Unfortunately for me though they’ve not managed to distinguish themselves on this record and it ends up sounding a bit like bunch of other bands but not as good. Don’t get me wrong, it’s solid and tight, tracks two (Drapeau Blanc) and four (Les Bons Mots) are standouts and I know I would be nodding my head like crazy if I saw them live. But there is work to be done before I will get excited about this band; one for the connoisseur. Sorry.
