The Skull Defekts - Gospel Of The Skull - 7

Labels: Psychic Malmo
Review by: Alex Deller

Always think it’s a bit of a piss-take when a two-song single from a DIY band features a track available elsewhere, but ho hum. First up is the titular ‘Gospel Of The Skull’, which appears on the Skull Defekts’ admittedly excellent ‘Peer Amid’ LP. Herein hypnotic, Ex-ish guitar patterns spring, bounce, wind and repeat while the inimitable Daniel Higgs offers up his strange, croons and ululations. It’s great, yes, but we know it and we know it very well having played the album over and over and over and… Flipsider ‘Push It Down On Me’ is a far less delicate affair, a surging, hymnal pound that merges heavy repeat-o rock with skyward whoops and whistles in a manner that not only makes up for the familiarity of the a-side but also suggests we should all take a moment out of our busy schedules to offer a brief prayer requesting that the Higgs / Defekts partnership continues on for at least a little longer yet.
