A quick, superficial scour on the internet doesn’t result in much info on this band but will teach you everything you need to know about 80s legend Luther Vandross and also that ex-Watford legend Luther Blissett’s Q was one of the best books of last year. I do know that they are a 4-piece formed in 2010, that this is their debut EP and they come from Philadelphia.
Right, to the music”¦a friend had recently given me a copy of the record. I don’t always trust his judgment on this type of music as he’s recommended me some total dirge in the past”¦anyone remember Baby Chaos? However, this isn’t bad. Totaling 7 songs, things kick off with the title track, a short acoustic number that stops abruptly. This then goes straight into “This Is Like Fight Club” which sets the tone for the rest of the EP which is pretty much driving, melodic indie rock with a bit of a nod to 90s bands like Superchunk. There are elements of punk in this too and the recording is fairly raw and unpolished which is a good thing. Tom May of The Menzingers does guest vocals on “There’s Always Money”¦”. The vocals of one of the two singers remind me of someone I used to listen to but I can’t quite recall who. It’s all fairly catchy – closing track “Aztec Tomb” leans more towards punk rock and has a big chorus (beware: gang vocals close this track). This is a good, solid debut. Maybe I will listen to my friend’s advice more often.
