The Do's - s/t - CD (2011)

Labels: self released
Review by: MH

This is quite an unassuming CDR “” no info with it apart from the band name, an email address and the two song titles.

I put this on my ipod the other day while walking to work and had presumed this band must be American mainly because of the strong American twang and rolled Rs in the main vocals. I haven’t heard anyone playing early 90s grunge-style stuff in a long time. A very long time. I was still at school when grunge was in full swing. I later discovered that they are from Yorkshire “” Wakefield to be precise. I was also surprised to discover that there are only 2 of them in the band. The guitarist sings main vocals and the drummer does the backing vocals “” no bass guitar. They have quite a full sound and strong rhythms despite this. Quick Fix is the opening track and has a fuzzy riff repeating throughout “” my guess is that they have quite a few Sonic Youth records at home. Track 2 goes all shoegazy (another ancient art!) during the intro and for about ten seconds I think someone accidentally stuck a Slowdive song on the CD. The guitar and drums then come crashing back in and I’m transported back to 1991 when every other video on the music channels was from a grunge band. The backing vocals on this one remind me of “Slanted and Enchanted”-era Pavement although the song itself is most definitely a grunge song. I like the drums and driving rhythm on this one.

This one has taken me by surprise, it’s actually quite good. It’s a breath of (admittedly, regurgitated) fresh air but I haven’t heard new music of this style in quite a while and I’m impressed.
