Nately's Whore's Kid Sister - Ribs - CD (2012)

Once I got past the truly awful band name (yes I know it’s a ‘Catch-22’ reference, so what?) there were five fairly interesting tracks of slow, reverb-drenched metal. The whole EP just sounds so distorted and echoic, from the vocals to the pounding riffs. I must make reference to ‘Man Outside Cumberland Arms, Byker, 11/07/11’ which surely is the inebriated Geordie heir of some yearning, desperate Godspeed track.

When I read the press release stating the band’s influences included Bjork and Sleep I was expecting some watered down, mediocre version of them both but much of the output here is actually quite crushing and sure of itself, and tracks like ‘Regards, Bison’ wouldn’t be out of place on Southern Lord or sharing a record with a band like Humanfly. They lose this edge a little on ‘Fix My Corrections’, by far the most straightforward track here, but all in all the focus and consistency of this was a pleasant surprise.
