Not sure I have heard something by a band based in Dubai before. Bet most of their reviews say that mind you. Anyway, Rust is a solid record focused on punk and it’s post- variety. They tackle a few different styles on here, for example the first track had moments that got all gruff and melodic and reminded me of the Broadways, then the following track “Big Battles / Small Men” had more of a little funky groove to it that brought to mind something like Tubers or Mission of Burma, particularly in the vocals, although part way through it mellows out into a post rock bit. They do this a couple of times, pitching into spacey guitar effects in the middle of songs, which doesn’t work for me. I think that’s probably where the album falls down slightly, it never really gets consistent or focused, jumping around between styles for fun, and it’s at its best on the more urgent and punkier tracks. You get a trade off between the singers which works nicely – one of the vocalists is gruff and throaty, the other is more intense and carrying the songs. It’s a solid combination. Overall, Rust is a decent listen without being something I would be likely to come back to. Fair play to being a punk band in Dubai though.
