Piranha - Demo - CDR (2011)

Labels: self released
Review by: Oli Saunders

Piranha are members of Self-Loathing and Narwhal. They cite bands such as Loma Prieta and Funeral Diner as bands they like but don’t really sound like—which I agree with—as well as Baroness and Hammers—which I do see moreso in their sound. I guess they have very slight elements of screamo, a reasonable dose of sludge, and then the rest is a more difficult to decipher amalgamation of hardcore.

There are some neat riffs going on at times: 1:20 into the first song is an awesome guitar riff, especially as it builds up and goes for it at 1:40. Things are often a bit incoherent though, and the vocals are a little too monotonous, not changing pitch or tone. But hey, it’s a demo and a decent start. Track four shows the most promise, with a gentle teasing start which then erupts, before quietening down again. Some very different guitar work during this middle passage. It then goes for it again and ends the demo very well.
