Valys are a danceable hardcore band from Grimsby. I’m not sure there are many
bands even from Grimsby, so at least I now know one! Anyway, the best way I can
describe it is somewhere between Snapcase and “Frank Carter” era Gallows. The
sound is kind of between rock and punk, with screamed vocals. This EP features their
new single Pretty Bones and two tracks from their recent BBC Live session, which
includes a live rendition of Pretty Bones. Deadbeat is the first of the two and Valys
sound heavier and more abrasive live. There’s a lot of energy going on yet lots of
melody from the guitars. There is no let up as Valys fling themselves into the live
version of Pretty Bones, which compared to the slick, clear production of the recorded
song, again sounds more urgent and abrasive. It’s my first time hearing Valys and
it’s good. They could certainly become a good live act with some more material and
progression behind them, but this is a good place to start, plus you can download it for
free from Pornography For Cowards web store. There is also a short interview at the
end, where they explain how they got their band name too.
