Washing Machines - demoz - CDR (2013)

Labels: self released
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Stumbled across this on a blog the other day and was pretty impressed. Washing Machines have three songs of lo-fi indie / garage rock that caught my attention with the wailed vocals on opening track “œFuture Alien Space Ghost”, bearing a definite resemblance to 90s emo bands like Ordination of Aaron, all desperation and howling. They vary things with airy backing vocals and fuzzy guitar. It’s an interesting combination that works quite nicely, coming across in a manner that some of the more arty bands of that aforementioned period did. “œFlorida” drifts into the picture slackly, kind of initially triggering thoughts of stuff like Gun Outfit. It’s a mellower, more stoned number that again has these odd little hints that takes me back to bands they probably have no intention of sounding anything like. Again, it’s got some lovely airy vocals and sways towards the end. Things are wrapped up with “œBefore She Came”, which brings back the whiney vocals to great effect.

Really enjoyed this and look forward to hearing what this band does with the sound they’ve developed, it’s right up my street, and is just a heartbeat and a tiny bit of polish away from being superb.
