If sad and sparse acoustic songs are your thing then Jen Buxton’s latest offerings could be right up your street. She is a Newcastle-based singer songwriter (Australia and definitely not a Geordie) and recorded these five songs in a bedroom in the space of a couple of hours last month. There are five songs here that are lyrically very open and honest whilst reminiscing and telling tales of regret and sorrow. The first two song titles are “Anhedonia” and “Dystymia” which give more than a hint as to where this is coming from lyrically. I must admit that I had to look up the definition of both words. Soundwise, think of a more stripped bare Lucero and husky female vocals of some depth and emotion and that would be somewhere in the right ballpark of how this sounds. Tim Barry would be another good point of reference. The standout track for me is “Get Drunk, Text Linc” which really turns up the sadness lyrically and in the feel of Jen’s vocals. This one is a contender for the best song she has written. If you like this then she also has an album out called “Don’t Change Your Plans” which is a good’un.
