Bastions - Bedfellows Part One: The Bastard Son - LP (2013)

Labels: Holy Roar
Review by: Edward Ling

I really wanted to like this. I’d heard a lot of good things about these North Waleians. North Wales produces interesting nut jobs and freakoids like nowhere else in the UK. Sweeping regionalist generalisation, but you speak as you find. And nut jobs and freakoids tend to make very good noise.
Initially, bit let down. Overall quality was somewhat like having a breezeblock rubbed in my face. A solid enough wall of sound, but a bit dull, and harsh enough to annoy but not to inspire awe and attention. Almost try-hard hardcore. Then, as the speed picked up and the noise got sludgier I kind of got it. There’s a lot of sound here, deep, throaty heavy sound “” dark and a bit quirky at turns. I checked these out on youtube and they’re very hairy for a hardcore band “” which kind of fits as this is half way to drone. No shortage of poke, songs have enough density and freedom of manoeuvre without getting self indulgent or bloated “” so yeah. Does the cause of the North Waleian freakoids everywhere very good service. Thank you for the free download people. I enjoyed it. And think many other people will too. Good work.
