Optional Body - Surviving Avalanches / Inelastic - 7

This little gem has been sitting in our digital list for a couple of months now and from what I understand these two songs were recorded 5 years ago and are only now being made available. This is a band whose members have history in the likes of Angel Hair, Camera Obscura, Dead And Gone and Vietnam amongst others. In fact, their ex-bands list makes for impressive reading. Optional Body open things with the frenetic “Surviving Avalanches” which is aided by the hints of desperation in Sonny Kay’s vocals and has a great, distinctive guitar sound. Despite its fast pace, there is an almost claustrophobic feel to this one. “Inelastic” is slower, with a more awkward time signature and is similarly strong. There is a bit of Drive Like Jehu in the riffs on both tracks. I have no idea if they are still together or whether they will record any new songs. Alas, it appears unlikely on both counts.
