True Mutants - Frizz - split - 7

Labels: Negative Party Records
Review by: MH

This split record has apparently been released on all sorts of colours. The copy the label sent in is grey and True Mutants are up first. Hailing from San Francisco they serve up two songs of noisy punk. “Same Way” has a bit of Unwound in the guitar sound and the female vocals are a little frantic – nice. “Simulacrum” is good too. It is nicely energetic – I get a bit of Sonic Youth and Huggy Bear from this one. These two songs have got me interested and I’m keen to hear more from these guys. Frizz are on the B side by way of Pittsburgh. They play a kind of grungy indie rock and aren’t bad either. “Concrete Leisure” is a mid-paced post punk thing that rides a nice riff. The other song they do on here is “Undercover Cop” which is a bit more upbeat. I’m less into this one as it’s a little on the rocky side and I’m not so keen on the lyrics (“Everybody freeze!”). It’s not terrible though. True Mutants are a nice find.
