Phil Tyler - We Sunk The Ship To Get Rid Of The Rats - CD (2013)

Labels: self released
Review by: Oli Saunders

Banjo music is an occasional music trip I take and Phil Tyler is my usual method of transport. This is his 3rd album – it seems to be a small side project (going for quite a few years now) rather than anything else as I’ve never seen news of him actually playing. To be honest this reminds me a lot of his first and second albums: well thought out finger-picked riffs that are Fahey-esque at times. Vocals on a few of the tracks which are the standouts, along with Hero’s Mustard which gets a violin involed (I think it’s a violin?) – I’d really like to hear more multi-instrumental songs. Solid throughout but I think he peaked with his second album.
