I saw this band play their first gig the other night at a warehouse in the inner city of their hometown of Brisbane. The venue was great – it was a donation to get in and there was a massive bowl of punch for everyone to share. It was also BYO drinks which was great. It would be even better if the off licences (or bottle shops, or bottle-o’s as they call them here) didn’t charge an extortionate rate for a beer – they charge almost as much as the actual pubs. Back in England in 1991, I remember me and my genius friends thinking we were really clever for buying 48 cans of Norseman lager for about £4 in the town centre to take back to Reading Festival. We were then mildly disappointed when we realised it was just 1.8% strength… Anyway, back at this place in Brisbane, they are allowed to put on one noisy band night per month and the rest of the time it gets used for all sorts of other stuff including comedy, acoustic stuff or recording local bands as diverse as Little Shadow, J Francis, Seahorse Divorce and Deer Lord – who are also all pretty good. It’s a cool venue.

Reverie themselves have some crossover of members with other Brisbane bands – Milestones is the only one I am familiar with at this stage. They list Sunny Day Real Estate, American Football and Mineral amongst their influences and sad but angry is the order of the day. Sad, melodic riffs aplenty but with a touch of anger to the vocal delivery. The vocals here are raspy and they play slow to mid-paced on this four song demo. Soundwise, I think they sound like a cross between Dads and something more aggressive like Dikembe. It’s a promising start.
