I’m a bit more familiar with Lake Michigan than I was last time I wrote about him as “Clavicle Relief” really whet my appetite and I’ve had his music on reasonably regular rotation in my house since then particularly late at night. This new one is more of the same which is good news for me. To change things up a bit he has a few others along at times for some backing vocals and additional guitar lines. The end result is a little fleshing out of the sound on some of the tracks which gives “Foliage” a slightly fuller feel than before. “Coronet” even features a beat but overall the instrumentation still remains sparse. Comparisons to Owen and Death Cab For Cutie continue to be relevant and their influence is apparent but this is instantly recognisable as Lake Michigan even in the first few seconds of opener “Old Time”. The fingerpicking, slow, slow pace and hushed, breathy vocals give this such a mellow and warm vibe. If you’ve listened to him before and like what you’ve heard you’re going to be into this and if you’re still waiting to dive in then this one is as good an indication as any as to what you’re in for. Lovely stuff again.
