It’s always handy when a band you’ve been meaning to check out for ages sends their stuff in for review. Shield Your Eyes have already put out a whole bunch of releases but have escaped my focussed attention until now on what is their fifth full length so I’m late to the party. They deal in bluesy and mathy post hardcore and are pretty uncompromising in their sound. The opening few seconds is some spazzy riffing and they never fully settle even though second track “Doubt” is more controlled and slower. Lots of jumping in time signatures and structure, and a rowdiness and chaos reigns throughout. Even a stripped-down song with vocals and harmonica retains that raucousness. A few of the tracks are more drawn out and the closer is over nine minutes long with twists and turns as it builds. Some of the forays into blues territory step a little too far in that direction for my own personal taste but this is an engaging album and I’m sure I’d enjoy their frantic chaos live.
