Graham Repulski - Portable Grindhouse - Tape (2014)

Labels: Hope For The Tape Deck
Review by: Oli Saunders

The care with which Graham sends me his records astounds me; this tape was wrapped in bubble wrap inside a large cardboard box; the only thing missing was the cotton wool. Sadly (and slightly ironically), my tape player broke as I tried to play it so here I am streaming off Bandcamp.

You know the deal by now folks. We’ve reached double figures for Graham Repulski reviews on CZ and number three this frickin’ year. Impersonating Robert Pollard inside a bin whilst taking an axe to an array of instruments at his disposal, Graham continues to create an interesting noise. Nothing better exemplifies this than track 4, ‘D-Beat At Dawn’, which transitions from quiet droney feedback into some sort of jamming into vocals with guitar bleeps into a strummed guitar before reaching the two minute mark where the contrast in cleanness and beauty of the music is breathtaking. This song is followed up by ‘Funny Man’ and ‘The Ass Galleries’, which are interludes of mostly noise, before ‘Great Fakers’ plays an ambient sound over the top of a guy talking about soap. On reflection there is definitely overkill on the amount of noise this time round. I’d prefer more tracks like ‘Uncle X’ which has a great riff and actually resembles songwriting (in relative terms). It’s like Graham read that review of Filthy Turd on Collective and has decided to up his game of fucking with our heads.
