Museum Mouth is a band I intended to listen to ages ago when they were first reviewed on Collective Zine, and then again when they got a second review. Both reviews made it sound like I’d be into them but I never got around to actually listening to them. It’s a familiar story. What better way then to finally get around to it than by picking up their new one from the review pile. This latest effort is a form of concept album with lyrics told from the perspective of a guy obsessing about someone he can’t have and the songs tell a story. Musically we’re talking distorted indie/punk with a poppy slant. It sounds at times like a poppier Thermals and production-wise there is a similar sound going on. They have a nice line in melody which lifts itself through the distortion and lo-fi production too. One of these songs, “Handsome and Boring” sounds a fair bit like “Constant Headache” by Joyce Manor by the way. The second half of the album features a greater bitterness lyrically as things begin to fall apart. “Saltwater” has a really nice guitar line running throughout the track and this track is particularly sad. I like it. If you look at the Bandcamp page there is a whole bunch of other stuff that they’ve recorded. I’ll be working my way back through it all anyday now.
