The Brackish - Big Guys - CD (2014)

Labels: self released
Review by: Captain Fidanza

New Wave Jazz Prog is the rather troubling label this group of musicians has chosen to apply to itself, but to prevent this causing the casual listener to think they might be a bunch of arseholes with their arsehole heads stuck up their arseholes, they have cleverly chosen to design the single best album cover I’ve ever seen in my life. Just look at that dude’s face, it’s absolutely impossible to look at that photograph and not feel happy about things. (Don’t worry PETA, fish don’t have any sensation in their faces so they can’t feel the hooks and anyway he put it back in the lake after his pal had taken the snap.)

After that cover, the music was always going to be a secondary concern, but thankfully it’s fairly decent; nothing groundbreaking and certainly more in keeping with the Jazz Prog label than the New Wave one, but I can’t help thinking it might have been improved by having some time-travelling hep cat from the sixties alternately mumbling and screaming nonsense about mother earth all over the top of it.

Concentrate on that dude’s happy, smiling face and you won’t go far wrong.

I’m fucking getting me one of those all-weather jumpers too.
