Hammerfist - Isolation - CD (2013)

Labels: Ghost Town
Review by: Oli Saunders

There must be some sort of app for obtaining generic hardcore band and album names. Unless they are named after the Amiga game, which would actually be pretty cool. Amiga Format gave it a score of 89%, praising its complexity and stating “Hammerfist is definitely a game to keep you busy for a very long time”. Two games that kept me busy for a long time were The Chaos Engine and Speedball 2. In fact, I can still remember the afternoon when my Dad picked me up from primary school in his orange car (I forget what make) and unveiled a brand new Amiga 500+. It had Lemmings and a few other games as start ups. We’d buy a few and, ahem, obtain loads from my Granddad in Peterborough when we went to visit. At Christmas I would unwrap the next Monkey Island game and then we would all fight to complete it first. I spent the start of year 7 infatuated with the near arrival of Sensible World Of Soccer. I made up a song and sang it during tutor time. I also got up early every morning to watch Bump The Elephant. Me and Ed Regan learned the theme song to that and sang it in a music lesson once. Chris Lewis sang Gabrielle’s ‘Dreams’ on another occasion.

I could go on. Hammerfirst remain a generic hardcore band but do make a solid effort at five songs on this EP, averaging about two minutes for each. They are proud that “you will not find any crossing of genres” with them but, unfortunately, I’ve heard it all before.
