Tendril - Smear - Tape (2012)

Labels: Tension Head
Review by: Alex Deller

Hereabouts, Tendril give us five tracks of taut, thrusting noise-rock scummery. Things tend towards the short and terse; miniature blasts of aggro clank that power ahead like they’re driven by punk rock fumes but tangle, squall and rend as though they’re also taking cues from Throat, Big’n and second album Drive Like Jehu. As well as feeling like your tender meats are being mangled by the sonics there’s also a claustrophobic, panic attack sense to the band’s sound that I can’t quite put my finger on. It might be the off-kilter rhythms, the frequent reliance on string-bent clangour or simply my own general wussiness, but either way it’s either a warning or a green light depending on what kind of stuff you’re made of. Me? I can get over being a wimp and enjoy the frenzied tussle, for short bouts at least.
