Total Control - Typical System - LP (2014)

Labels: Iron Lung – La Vida Es Un Mus
Review by: Alex Deller

It took that squat gig and six cans of beer in a carrier bag, but I finally twigged that ‘Henge Beat’ wasn’t just a decent record but a pretty great one. ‘Typical System’, though, was far more immediate. Could be that my system was already inured to them, but ultimately I think it’s just a bit easier to digest: lighter in sound and a bit less frazzled, but no less interesting for it. The things I think when I listen to it are roughly as follows: New Order. Neu! and Kraftwerk (though the repetition could have just as easily been induced by drugs/boredom as stylistic intent). The Where Birdmen Flew compilation. Dining Out Records. Bontempi keyboards. Spindly, squelchy garage rock played on the Voidoids’ gear. An air of blank disinterest in life offset against a mysterious desire to create. And so forth. All in all, it’s rather fantastic and I would highly recommend that you purchase a copy post-haste.
