Football, etc. - Disappear - 7

I hadn’t realised how long it had been since Football, etc.’s last album, “Audible”, came out and was thinking it was last year but the blurb with this one shows it was 2013. This is four new songs and sees the band building on the sound from “Audible” and with J. Robbins on recording duties they are sounding brilliant. Opening track, “Sunday” is absolutely lovely. It’s melancholy and laidback, and I kind of fall in love with the nature of the lyrics like “Sometimes I find myself in an awful place”. In fact, I’d rank this amongst my top handful of Football, etc. songs. There is a restrained twinkle to the guitar sound across the tracks here and the lyrics are reflective and thoughtful. Vocally, Lindsay is sounding better than ever and “Receiver” features plenty of her lingering vocal style. If you think you’ve heard this song before you might well be right as it’s a renamed and recorded version of “Hut 3” from their split with Square Business a while back. “Open” closes things on a somber note. It’s a strong return. Cool artwork too which was put together by newish drummer Daniel Hawkins.
