Fawn Spots - From Safer Place - Download (2015)

Fawn Spots have managed quite a feat: they’ve somehow channelled the blustery power and up-in-the-air melodies of mid-period HÜsker DÜ without coming off as some nth generation gruff punk knock-off. Like I say, quite a feat, and one that’s achieved by approaching things from a different angle – melding the HÜskers’ raw materials with the tangled dissonance and desperate groans of ye olde Goldenrod and Spectra Sonic Sound bands. A grower rather than an immediate success, it takes a fair few spins before things really get nailed into your brain, and while I’d hesitate to say it’s a great album there’s certainly enough promise on display to suggest they might at some point be capable of one.
