William English - Basic Human Error - CD (2015)

Labels: Grandad
Review by: Kunal Nandi

William English have made an album of top-notch gurn-core for you smoked-out wastrels. I might as well mention Iron Monkey now since it’s undeniable that their shadow hangs heavy across this album (and across the UK’s sludge / hardcore / metal / whatever scene as a whole), but at least William English have the common decency to raise themselves above their incredibly average peers and breathe some life into proceedings.

There’s a sense of humour here, the whole thing’s played with a lot of heart (as evinced in the live setting where they look like five people that should never, ever have met) and there’s a surprising ton of melody and variety. Songs often get lengthy but never boring thanks to riffs worthy of Goatsnake, Fu Manchu and the aforementioned Monkey and some tasteful pacing. Don’t worry though, as when it does descend into properly drunken stupor territory, it is raging.

This band is the one that should be getting those godforsaken support slots at big venues with touring American bands, but they aren’t cool, so instead chuck them some money if you’re at all inclined because I think the poor buggers have got more kids between them than Hey Colossus.
