This split explores the black metal spectrum in markedly different ways, making for an intriguingly bleak ten minutes. Palace Of Worms is a one-body project, and manages to pull off something that’s lo-fi and gurgly yet packed full of interesting dynamics. Melodies weave in and out, and there’s even time for some fairly tasty guitar heroics along the way. Thoabath are definitely part of the same broad (burnt) church, but come at their grimness from a noise-damaged perspective. Their track twists, howls and crackles like a vampire in the sun, bringing to mind Wold, Blue Sabbath Black Cheer and the kind of stuff Crucial Blast has been trailing its long, pale fingers through for the past few years.
