Day Wave - The Days We Had - LP (2017)

Labels: Capitol
Review by: Oli Saunders

I’m not tired of this genre yet. Day Wave are hardly innovative but Jackson Phillips knows what he’s doing and makes some neat dreamy indie rock. ‘Something Here’ is a superb start; catchy but not too much so. ‘Home’ is even better as he reduces the poppiness and focuses on the simple but sombre lyrics that shine through. ‘Ordinary’ is not quite as good as here he also repeats lyrics a lot but it’s not as effective.

Other highlights include the incredibly catchy ‘On Your Side’; there are lots of ooooh ooohs in places which I’m no fan of, but the rest is on point. He sure does love repeating words over and over, a technique that is mostly effective. ‘Wasting Time’ has its moments, as does ‘Promises’. The album is perhaps a song or two too long but I’ll be adding this to my list of albums that dazzle me every so often, alongside the likes of Shimmering Stars and The Foundry Field Recordings.
