Breag Naofa - Cearo - Download (2017)

Labels: self released
Review by: Alex Deller

With their name being an Old Irish term I had loose hopes that Breag Naofa would play something sickening in the Coscradh vein, but instead we get stodgy stadium crust that’s heavy on build-ups and light on engagement. The music has the damp, epic quality of all those Euro bands that got into Envy circa ‘A Dead Sinking Story’, albeit imbued with a fondness for sawn-off denim jackets and Martyrdöd patches rather than homemade Orchid tees. The two tracks here are ambitious in length if not delivery, and while they do their best to batter things’re deployed in such a stock manner as to be almost comforting. Not, it has to be said, what you generally want from this kind of endeavour, unless I’m wonderfully mistaken and there’s a hitherto unidentified demographic just crying out for soothing, soft-edged D-beat lullabies to send them contentedly off to the land of nod.
