Call me glib, but I’m going to be a lazy bugger and say that this makes me think of what might happen if you took the Yaphet Kotto / Suicide Nation split, melted it down and tried spinning the lumpen, bubbling mess on your turntable. You get the churning, metallic blasts and frenzied kickdrum action of the metal kids riddled with the dark crybaby melodies of their buddies forging the beast’s backbone, rounded off with some rasping Sam McPheteers-sounding vocals that occasionally stray into low-end grumbles and roars. While most of the record’s twelve tracks stick to a quickstep get-the-fuck-in, get-the-fuck-out pattern, the band aren’t afraid to wade out into more atmospheric waters and elaborate on their portentous leanings, letting the odd song stretch out into brooding City-of-Caterpillar-gone-black-metal epic parts that add to the ominous, gloomy tone shrouding the album both musically and lyrically. The end result is a good, solid hardcore record that doesn’t let up, and whilst not totally blowing my mind it’s more than enough to make me sorry I couldn’t catch them when they toured these shores a few months back.
