After a multitude of listens I’ve come to the unfortunate conclusion that Better that a Thousand perch precariously on the fence that divides the good bands from the fairly average ones.
Both “You Were There’ and “Self Worth’ are hardcore punk with the emphasis on hardcore and making good use of Ray Cappo’s distinct vocals. As with Shelter you get the usual insightful lyrics – no throwaway lyrics about girlfriends to be found on this record. No sir. “Poison in your Brain’ – ventures further into hardcore territory and wins bonus points for the way Ray Cappo screams “Poison in your fucking brain” in an insane manner. Musically, this is all competent stuff but, infuriatingly, it seems to lack that indefinable quality that just makes records “good”.
