Neon Hunk - Smarmymob - LP (2003)

Labels: Load
Review by: Chris Bress

I wasn’t moved by Neon Hunk when I played it at work (I was running around and didn’t really have a proper chance to hear it) but after taking it home and giving it a proper listen I have really got into it.

They play really off the wall lo-fi punk which really does belong on load, they seem to take influences from bands like Mens Recovery Project and Black Dice but with more funky keyboard lines. They would have belonged on Kill Rock Stars three years ago.

Neon Hunk doesn’t really play songs, its more like bursts of danceable indie punk which verges on the odd noise part at times. If you liked the weird bands on the Vermiform compilations then I’m sure you’ll love this.
