No Knife - Fire in the City of Automatons - CD (2000)

Labels: Time Bomb
Review by: Pete Burn

I really like No Knife, I kind of see them as a continuation of what Drive Like Jehu were doing but in a poppier, melodic way with dynamics similar to a band like Braid. Someone should have asked these guys to appear on that Pixies tribute, they would have done a good cover of “Dig for Fire”. This album also has a bit of a ‘mod’ feel to it which seems to be getting popular with the Yanks at the moment. The production is amazing and a definite continuation from the albums Mark Trombino has recorded. Most people tend to find No Knife a bit hit n’ miss, in that when they are good they are amazing, but when they aren’t they are failing to match the standard you want to hear.
