Some Girls - All My Friends Are Going Death - CD (2004)

Labels: Deathwish
Review by: Damien Mills

So here it is, the full length from the much hyped some girls.

As I’m sure you’ll be aware this band features several members/ex members of many an influential outfit of a lot of bands with different styles, from youth crew (American Nightmare), metalcore (Unbroken), indie-rock (Kill Holiday) aswell as countless other san diego bands (Struggle, Swing kids, Crimson Curse…)

I’ve lived with this record for what must be over a month now and I still quite like it, a lot of people were (and still are) ready to dismiss them outright as some kind of half baked vanity project, and maybe it is, but a fun one that bares repeated listens. Much of the material was previously released (both 7″s are included in thier entirity) but for whatever reason the songs seem to have a lot more identity in this format, I guess as their is greater emphasis on the context.

Musically it is somewhere between early American Nightmare and some Robotic Empire style ‘spazz’ rock band you could imagine being on tour with Daughters or something (but don’t hold it against them), however the more straightforward element means they stick out from the legions of floppy fringed three one g ites, again giving them a much stronger identity and if you will, a little more soul.

Overall it’s not something anyone is gonna hold up a few years and say it changed their life, but its a fun distraction from the more self conscious acts going around.
