Well, you got the emo name, you got the emo packaging, you got the emo songs? Hmmm.

The Autumn Year come close to being incredible, but I don’t think they are there yet. They play the majority their emo rock super depressed sounding, which is just how I like it. I mean, I Hate Myself and Boilermaker didn’t become the incredible bands they were by being happy did they?

Basically the Autumn Year are dwelling on the slow to mid paced emo rock ground, with strained and heartfelt vocals that pour the emotion out. I’m not sure exactly what the words that are being wrenched out are, because there is no lyric sheet. Guitars churn, crash and burn, occasionally breaking into that apocalyptic spiral that my favourite emo rock bands have perfected. “The Best Years Of” is miserable as fuck, dawdling a long all slowly, then hitting that end of the world storm, then flaking out on you again, oh man. Stand out track. Stylewise, it’s set halfway between Mineral and Texas is the Reason, with the twinkle parts of the former and the rock of the latter. Shit, just figured it. This is a long the lines of Cursive.

I guess with a little more production, they’ll sound a lot better too, as there is a distinct air of “demo quality” at times to this one. Which kind of dampens their effect. But never mind. I can definitely seeing them progressing to the next level though, especially as they are a very solid live band.

Summary: they would fit, but stand out, on Emo Diaries. I guess you still get this record if you like the bands that actually fit the description “emo” on Emo Diaries and aren’t just plain old rock groups with sappy lyrics and a guitar part stolen from Christie Front Drive. Current members of Dropnose (!) and Canvas (!!!!!!).
