The Unknown - Radio Lied To Me - CD (2003)

Labels: Boss Tuneage
Review by: Mike Whelan

Another slice of merry pop-punkness from Boss Tuneage this. The Unknown are about as upbeat as it gets, and fairly prolific with it, I read somewhere that this is their sixth full length release, but I don’t believe it.

This might not appeal to everyone, but “˜Radio Lied To Me’ is pure dumb fun. The Unknown aren’t about making political statements or describing their innermost thoughts and feelings, they’re about smiling, and drinking, and laughing, probably. This isn’t going to push the envelope of rock, or convert hordes of pop-music loving teenagers, but for 28 minutes The Unknown manage to find their own rung on the ladder.

It’s all pretty much three-chord madness, rattled off in the same chirpy style as Midtown or most other pseudo-punk bands touting their music these days. And even though parts of the album are run of the mill, there are a few gems in “˜Picture This,’ “˜Merry Go Round’ and the title track.

On a sunny day in your back garden with the barbeque roasting The Unknown would probably go down a treat, on a wet November evening they would probably just be annoying, but they’ll never be boring. Best left to cheerful fans of the genre.
