I think some of these fellows used to spend their time in Burned Out Bright. It’d make sense. This band is very similar, taking on the emo style, crying a lot, bashing the heck out of their instruments, throwing in sad parts… it’s all there. It does start off in a bit of a screamo fashion, with lots of boys hollering and the guitars chugging away, but it swiftly morphs into something else. “Hearts and Bricks” bounds through a few distinct segments, mostly relying on the screamed vocals and fast, melodic guitars, before giving way to the super pretty, twinkle filled final minute. Gorgeous. And you get three more tracks of this intense, scream filled, emorama. The final song has a real epic feel to it, building up with multiple boys being crushed by the Star Wars trash compactor, even throwing a bit of Portrait style violin in for good measure.
I find them to be fairly similar to the 7″ that I, Robot released many moons ago. Which is a good thing. The vocals have a similar quality, and the guitars blaze in a familiar way too. To me, it’s all good. Great first record (wish it had been a 10″!), I hope they go on to make an LP some day as they sound more than capable of it.
