We Sang Songs - s/t - CD (2008)

Labels: self released
Review by: Andy Malcolm

You know that I’m always going to be happy to listen to any band that plays midwestmo, and We Sang Songs are the latest in a recent line of young upstarts to take on the style. Whilst you’re waiting for that Algernon Cadwallader LP to drop, you could do worse than give this 3 song EP a spin. Starting off with “Whoallercoaster” you are straight away in for traditional, semi-mathy guitars, and boys yelping a lot, crying hoarsely, and easing a very pleasant sound out of their guitars. What you get is a cleaned up version of Cap’n Jazz, nowhere near as rowdy and with more emphasis on the song writing. So I guess that means you can compare them to the Jazz June crossed with Look Mexico. I have no issues with that. The three songs lurch their way on by quite quickly, not really giving you too much time to dwell on what they’re doing, but at least you can just listen again once you’re done. I particularly enjoy the mid-point of “Today Already Happened”, all off-key warbling and repetitious guitars before the backup screamy guy gets involved and the song picks up speed.

I think it doesn’t quite capture the spirit of yore, but I think they will definitely appeal to anyone who enjoys that sound, but wants something contemporary instead of OAP, wait, sorry, I meant OOP.
