Five new songs from Mammoth Grinder, and it’s a sturdy enough effort. Sounds to me like they’ve stripped things down, the sludgier elements and hardcore moments all but banished as the band zone in on their death metal influences. This is all well and good since main dude Chris Ulsh certainly knows what he’s doing, but it’s also a crowded market for Entombed / Dismember wannabes right now and there’s not a whole lot here to really set ‘Undying Spectral Resonance’ apart. If there’s one oddball move it’s having ‘Call From The Frozen Styx’ – an enjoyable, Stranger Things-y instrumental – carve a channel right through the middle of the record. This, though, is neither enough to kill or elevate an experience that is, overall, enjoyable while it lasts but somewhat inessential in the long-term.
