Press releases are funny things. If I had heard the Hazey Jane’s single “New York”, minus the sheet of slavering shite that comes attached with it, I probably would have had a hard job giving a fuck about it either way. They’re not the worst band to ever come out of Dundee, not by a long way. But since the View, they do all seem to think they have something to offer the greater public, which when you’ve been to Dundee, you really have to doubt. Its just you know, completely uninspired in any way shape or from.
However if you pop the one track promo cd in and sit down to read , several things jump out at you which change the status from inoffensive and insipid, to contrived poser wankery. For a start, it tells you about the B-side, yet the promo CD is strictly a one track affair. This suggests the band are aware of the gashness of their own B-side, and thus wished to hide it from critical eyes. Secondly, it name drops the guy who recorded this as having worked with Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Junior. Who clearly have about as much in common with the samey shames as Amy McDonald. In fact, that’s what this reminds me of. Amy Macdonald. Music for people who work in hairdressers and buy motorhead t-shirts from Top Shop (where coincidentally, the video for this songs has been play listed for the store’s in store TV channel, that’s your seal of quality right there).
If I was the samey shames, I’d be total after my “PR” company with a bat for making me look like a total cunt.
