Zookeeper - Trumpets / Snow in Berlin - CD (2007)

Review by: David Morrison

On the first few listens I thought this was ok, nothing special. But the more time I gave it the more it revealed itself to be a multi-layered folk/Americana masterpiece.

‘Trumpets’ is so subtle that if you’re not paying attention you’ll miss out on it’s beauty. It’s only after time you can really appreciate the depth and the warmth that’s gone it to this wonderful song. There’s a lot of instrumentation on this but it all fits together so perfectly you never feel overcrowded.

‘Snow in Berlin’ is a different affair. The drums seem to make this song sound a lot more immediate and direct at first. But still sitting over the top is again some very dreamy orchestration from a wealth of sounds.

This is new music from Christopher Simpson. Previously of Mineral and The Gloria Record fame. Whilst this doesn’t have much in common with either of his previous bands it does retain the heart, soul and overall passion.
