It can safely be said that probably a couple of hundred people have been waiting for this for quite some time. Ever since the 101 called it a day and Eric Richter got together a new band. The initial suggestions were that it might be a bit more like Christie Front Drive. Two hundred people giggled like school girls. A few songs emerged on Myspace, two hundred people nodded and smiled. A new seven inch was released. Two hundred people clapped their hands.
This single is pretty much about what you might have hoped for. “Brighten” is a stand out tune, rousing, driving, catchy and exceptionally good. You can’t really add to much more. This is pretty much exactly what I hope to hear any time I buy a new indie rock record. Ok, so the final guitar solo is a bit much at times, but overall this is a cracker. It’s wedged firmly between the 101 and CFD, and to my ears it sounds a lot like Sundays Best, who I always thought of as the pop CFD, so, I guess, that’s fairly logical?
Cavalry on the flip sounds like an early 101 effort, it’s not as good as some of the other tracks that the GC offered up on the Myspace page (DIAMOND SUITS), but it has plenty to offer – including some mumbled bits, hurrah – and it’s an altogether pleasant tune. It just somehow feels like a b-side, again there is some eyebrow raising guitar solo-age, and I think they’ll probably top this one on the forthcoming 10″.
