the Cold Beat - Dumbwaiter - CD (2009)

Labels: self released
Review by: Joe Callaghan

The Cold Beat, traffic islands, white lines, and those who just ignore pelican crossings, opting to battle lanes of moving traffic. Things you’d find in the middle of the road! Jeopardy! Dumbwaiter occupied my ears on the journeys to and fro my work today, and whilst it was relatively pleasant, it was equally forgettable. Now, I couldn’t sing you a single hook. Not even hum it, or mouth and air guitar a riff in a Beavis and Butthead sort of way. I remember the bass being kind of fuzzy, in a messy indie-rock way, and vocally, it was a bit rugged. I think there was a gang shout of “œI just want to be free”, which I’m sure digs deeper than the surface of your emotions. So, was it any good? I couldn’t even tell you. It wasn’t bad, but I’m probably not going to listen to it again. Its pedals steadily through 6 roughly identical alt-rock jams, which leave an impression as lasting as the bleak, undistinguishable stuff you’d likely hear on the radio. There are the kind of band that if they sold out an arena tour, you wouldn’t be surprised, but it would just add to your conclusion that nothing makes any sense anymore. The kids are all wrong. Back in my day blah blah. It sounds reasonably accomplished, and if popular culture is anything to by, there must be millions of people who like their music forgettable, inoffensive and drab, therefore, this could be a major hit. There could even be a thread about them on Punktastic as we speak. Fancy that.
