Maribelle - With Teeth As Sharp As Old Friends - LP (2010)

Labels: self released
Review by: Chaz Hewitt

This guy used to play in Weekend Nachos and Plan of Attack apparently, which is cool.

Aaron Ross aka Maribelle plays sweet, heartfelt folk ramblings. Naturally, it sounds nothing like the aforementioned hardcore bands, but he’s kept the raw and honest approach of punk music in the way he performs these songs.

These songs are completely stripped down; most have only vocals, some guitar strums, a bit of accordion and a few other instruments popping in and out. This decision to not over do things works hugely in his favour. The songs are sad yet hopeful, and there’s a real intimacy to the guys voice. Lyrics are nice and depressing which always makes this stuff ten times cooler.

Overall, this is a really nice record. Found myself putting it on more to hang out to than actually sitting down and listening to it, but its cool all the same. Bits reminded me of Bon Iver, so if you dig stuff like that give this a go.
