Creatures’ ‘I, Lucifer’ LP was one of my favourite records of 2010 so I’ve been looking forward to this new 7″ for a while. Right off the bat I felt a little disappointed that the first track didn’t pummel straight in with crushing riff after riff after riff like the LP had. It starts with a slower build-up for the first 15 or so seconds before the riffs start. Unlike the LP, which had some really clean production and the guitars right up the front, this 7″ has fuzzier, distorted guitars battling for prominence with a layer of crushing bass distortion. The vocals sound more tortured than before and they’re a good bit less prominent too. Genuinely, this is an awesome direction to take their music in. It definitely suits their misanthropic lyrical content a lot better than ‘I, Lucifer’ did. After hearing this, I can’t wait for the next full length. Creatures could be one of the best hardcore bands in the world just now. Hardcore fucking rules.
