Here is is some pleasing electro-pop, which I initially struggled to generate some words about, but here we go anyway. It’s certainly offering up some pleasing late night sounds, making me want to turn the light off. The electro part is all very smothering and cuddly, not too far away from a 12K release of 3 or 4 years ago, yet this combines with big silly 80s pop / dance layer over the top, and breathy vocals. It works better than it ought to, if the truth be told. Like when “American Mourning” bounces into this ludicrous bassy beat at the end, which is quite uplifting and enjoyable. Sometimes the vocals are really ridiculous, like a cross between Prince and a twat. Then they bring back the pumped up cheeseball bass again, and I try to stifle a giggle. “Cos when you hold me, I hold you tighter”. And there’s even a a bit on “ACheerlaeder” where they fade out and distort the vocals quietly before bringing it back.
On their Facebook page under their links it says “Salinger on MDMA”. What does that even mean? I am not sure it does a superior job of describing the sound than I do. Can you imagine Salinger on MDMA? I’m struggling. I guess if you want some goofy electro-pop-dance-whatever that certainly doesn’t take itself remotely seriously then you could do worse. Not all of this EP hits the spot for me, and I would hazard a guess that few of the people reading Collective Zine would make it past the initial 30 seconds, but it can certainly raise a smile, and for that I am grateful. Irony may or may not be involved, but approach this blind and you’ll be best off. Without allowing that side of things to colour my opinion on matters, I’d say that I think it’s pretty good.
