The Secret - Solve Et Coagula - CD (2010)

Labels: Southern Lord
Review by: Alex Deller

Despite being three albums deep this is my first encounter with this Italian wrecking crew, and on this evidence I’m hoping it won’t be my last. ‘Solve Et Coagula’, you see, is a fearsome concoction that takes greedy, plundering fistfuls of modern metal and condenses the ill-gotten tricks into wicked blasts of bleak, cacophonous rage. Pick cautiously through the remnants and you’ll discover doom’s laboured breathing, the cackling rasp of black metal and the rabid dissonance of Converge or Trap Them, all of which has been wrapped carefully in something that may once have been a tattered, patch-encrusted leather jacket so it could be delivered to our door and left to gurgle wet, bloody oaths up at us from the step. Disgusting and somewhat harrowing, but murderously compulsive with it.
