Palisades - demo - Download (2011)

Labels: self released
Review by: Oli Saunders

I was starting to give up on Aussie screamo (or should I say screamo in general?), since numerous recent recommendations or discoveries have failed to make any kind of impact at all. But then fairly late on a Saturday evening I see Arwith from Utarid posting about this band and my doubts are blown to pieces. Thankfully I still have enough desire to check out random bands that people post about and now and again there is a piece of solid gold out there that makes it all worth it.

To say it’s all about the vocals here would be harsh on the other components but it would be fair to say they will your grab attention the most. So harsh and powerful, occasionally a vocalist in this sort of band stands out above most of the rest and I wonder how they even manage to do what they are doing. That happens here, his screams are ridiculous, yet it still feels like things could get better as the band evolves. The instruments meanwhile are in sharp contrast to this harshness, playing a rather gentle melody alongside. This might put some people off in the same way that some people don’t like Carlisle. It certainly creates an interesting backdrop.

Four intense songs that strike the right balance between mixing things up and one guy basically screaming his heart out. The demo has just been released as a free download – http://palisadesmelbourne.bandcamp.com – but hopefully some physical copies will follow. I wish I was listening to it on tape right now, rather than through my crappy laptop speakers. Or, even better, live which must fucking destroy. I AM ALL OVER THIS.
