I thought that this came out earlier this year but it might have been the end of 2010 now that I scour the internet. In either case, I thought I’d write a few words about it now that I’ve finally got hold of a copy. There was a mild flutter of attention from the emo nerds of Collective around February time about the new album and then it disappeared into obscurity. Shame. Because Quiet Steps have got better over time and now they sound a bit like an Australian version of Sinaloa. On the downside, they’ve lost some of the semi-distinctive sound from their EP but, on the upside, they are still good and sounding like Sinaloa is no bad thing.
The band put their hearts into fifty minutes of fairly heart wrenching emo, without being over the top. The first song ‘Sales Rising’ is a beauty. There’s only one vocalist for the most part on the album and when he does more singing and less shouting, so that you can just about understand what he’s saying, it sounds great. They should do this more often. The other moments of the record that stand out for me are where he again adopts such vocals, e.g. ‘Measure Reaction’ and ‘One Breath’ which are both fantastic tracks. The rest of the album is not outstanding but it’s super solid emo overall.
Some nice words from Listen To Aylin on an insert about releasing the record. Slightly worrying that no Aussie label got involved, the rush of emo from that country has completely petered out. Quiet Steps fly the flag well here though and I hope they continue to do so.
